The summer after my freshman year at Morehouse College, I had a lot of time on my hands as a result of being denied from every internship I had applied to. I was so disappointed.
But since nobody else would give me one, I created my own summer internship. I got tired of waiting for a “yes”; so I created my own “yes” and wrote my first book, Daring to be Different: 25 Tips for a Life of Success.
Writing that book was the beginning of a new life for me. Not only did it launch my public speaking career, but I even started seeing my problems differently.
I wish I could go back and thank every internship coordinator that turned me down that summer after my freshman year. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be where I am today.
The challenge didn't come to break you: it came to make you!
