Travels From: Canada
Prior to his retirement in December 2006, Otis “Magic” Grant became the W.B.C International and Canadian Super Middleweight Champion. He is also the former WBO Middleweight Champion of the World, a two-time NABF Middleweight Champion, the 1991 Continental of America’s Super Middleweight Champion, Canadian Middleweight Champion, as well as a past member of the Canadian National Boxing Team, and a silver medalist at the 1987 Pan-American Games.
Otis Grant’s boxing career was unexpectedly halted for five years in the wake of a near-fatal car accident in June 1999. In November of 2004, Otis made a miraculous comeback to the sport of boxing after being advised by doctors that he would never be able to box again. His triumphant return to boxing was distinguished by wins in seven of his eight bouts, two titles and a number one ranking in the world by the W.B.C.
During the five year hiatus from boxing, Otis founded a charitable organization known as the “Otis Grant & Friends Foundation”. The primary focus of the foundation is its annual food drive, which donates truckloads of food, clothing and toys to organizations that assist the needy in the Greater Montreal Area. Additionally, Otis Grant & Friends helps sick children and their families, and supports a variety of youth group programs throughout the city. The Foundation has been fully operational since the holiday season of 1999, and Otis has assumed an increasingly hands-on involvement since retiring from boxing.
Otis Grant’s reputation is only partly earned in the ring, although he still maintains an active role as a primary advisor and key trainer, alongside his brother Howard, to the top boxing organization in Canada, Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM). He is respected in Montreal and the surrounding communities for his charitable endeavours, as well as for his continuing work with children and young people. Otis takes a particular interest in leadership training and special needs children, a challenge which he is currently able to focus on in his position as Coordinator at the Riverdale High School Community Learning Center. He is the recipient of numerous awards and is a popular guest speaker in great demand with organizations throughout North America.
