Cyrus Marcellus Ellis earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counselor Education from The Curry School of Education at The University of Virginia. While at the University of Virginia, Dr. Ellis was awarded the William Van Hoose Memorial Award from The Curry School of Education Foundation in April of 1999.

Dr. Ellis earned a Masters degree in Counseling Services and a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. While at Rider, Dr. Ellis was awarded the Lincoln Scott Walter Award in Counseling in 1996 and earned a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve in 1992.

As a professional counselor, Dr. Ellis has worked at almost every level of providing counseling services. Dr. Ellis has worked as a residential counselor and supervisor for MICA clients, as a social worker, as a psychological technician at private hospitals, a clinical therapist, a program coordinator for addiction services, and an assessment screener and counselor for a private for profit hospital. All of Dr. Ellis’ experiences involve the assessment, screening, treatment, and evaluation of clinical services for clients suffering from chronic mental health and addiction.

Dr. Ellis has presented a variety of national and international presentations as well as multiple national learning institute concerning counselor training, racial and ethnic conditions, and issues facing African Americans concerning their social, educational, vocational development. Dr. Ellis has traveled the globe concerning his social justice activities by presenting to His Majesty’s Ministry of Health in Katmandu, Nepal in January 2005.

Dr. Ellis is a Doctor of Counselor Education with over 16 years of experience counseling mental health disorders, personal adjustment, education issues, addictive disorders and career development. Dr. Ellis has the clinical and professional experience to speak to the shame, guilt and overwhelming sense of loss that individual and couples contend with as they attempt to cope with debilitating disorders such as depression, anxiety and addiction. I also understand the lying, deceit, personal pain, and hidden dangers of people attempting recovery.

As an advocate for social justice and civil rights, Dr. Ellis is an award wining social justice advocate. Dr. Ellis is a published author of scholarly work (print and film) discussing and designing interventions to address the negative emotive responses to being in a constant state of emotive distress over issues of racism, gender and class.

Dr. Ellis is a veteran of The United States Army, The United States Army Reserve and The New Jersey National Guard. He retired from military service as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps from The United States Army Reserve. he commanded a deployable Army Reserve Unit and as an enlisted man he served with the 5th Infantry Division (M). Dr. Ellis has been deployed to many significant training events and can articulate the needs of military families as their loved ones are deployed. Dr. Ellis can explain the stress and strain on military families throughout the rank structure but spend significant amounts of time discussing the needs of lower enlisted servicemen and women and their needs of re-joining their families and re-engaging in life after a long deployment.

As you have programming that addresses issues that fall within Dr. Ellis’ expertise, I am willing to participate as a guest to discuss these issues as well as acting as a “counterpoint” to any argument being put forth. As an advocate for human rights, civil rights and improved race-relations, I can provide an academic commentary as well as socially just commentary on all issues that relate to the ability of people to exist within society all at levels.
